The Nico Restricted Egress friction hinge is designed for timber casement windows where restricted opening and emergency escape access are both required.

Combining the features of a standard restrictor hinge and an egress-only hinge, this friction hinge provides an initial restricted opening to help reduce the risk of falls, before allowing the sash to move into the egress position when released. This makes it a practical option for timber window applications where safety, escape access and reliable day-to-day operation all need to be considered.

Supplied in matched pairs, the restricted egress hinge is fitted to the bottom of the sash, with a matched unrestricted egress hinge fitted to the top. The single restrictor button is integrated into the hinge and designed to be less tempting to children, while the hinge automatically resets when the window is closed from the egress position.

Manufactured from stainless steel, the Nico Restricted Egress hinge offers strong load-bearing performance and excellent corrosion resistance. Slotted fixing holes in the base channel and sash bar allow sash and frame adjustment during installation, with final fixing holes to secure the hinge once positioned.

The hinge also features a stainless steel riveted nose cap, 4.8mm stainless steel rivets, a glass reinforced nylon friction slide and a brass adjustment screw to regulate friction. Rivet holes are counterbored through a three-stage manufacturing process, helping support consistent tolerances and reliable operation.

Testing & Technical

  • Made in Britain to an ISO 9001 Quality System
  • Meets the requirements of BS EN 14351 for load bearing capacity of safety devices
  • Complies with BS 6375-2:2009 for strength and operation characteristics
  • Complies with Building Regulations Part B:2013 for fire escape
  • Complies with BS 9991:2011 for fire escape
  • Restricts window openings to a maximum of 100mm in compliance with BS 8213-1:2004
  • Security tested with Nico Xtra Bolts as a critical component within PAS 24:2016
  • Secured by Design approved as a Police Preferred Specification
  • Cycle tested as a critical component within BS EN 6375 Part 2 (resistance to repeated opening and closing)
  • Weather tested as a critical component within BS EN 6375 Part 1 (air, wind and water testing)
  • Endurance tested at maximum load carrying capacity to three times the British Standard requirement

Always refer to the ‘safe reaches for cleaning’ instructions in Approved Document K when specifying egress windows. Fabricators should also check all restricted openings to ensure they comply with Building Regulations, as vent size and profile variation can affect the final 100mm opening.
